Post-Sputnik UFO wave — multiple U.S. reports summarized by FBI — October–November 1957
An FBI internal memo from Mr. R.R. Roach to Mr. A.H. Belmont (November 12, 1957) summarized a surge of UFO reports following the Soviet Union's release of Sputnik. Cases included: a 'moon-like' object with a blue pulsing flame that reportedly landed near Vernal, Utah (October 10, 1957); an object landing in Nebraska with six people aboard who spoke to a farmer; a fiery object seen flashing from Albany, Georgia to Miami, Florida; a Coast Guard cutter sighting over the Gulf of Mexico; and automobile engine stoppages caused by UFOs in the southwestern states. Air Force Intelligence advised the FBI that all cases mentioned had 'for all practical purposes been resolved as being non-authentic or there was no basis for the sightings.'
“"persons in the Southwestern states while driving their cars have allegedly seen UFO's that caused the engines in their automobiles to stop"; "all the cases mentioned above have for all practical purposes been resolved as being nonauthentic or there was no basis for the sightings"”
This is an FBI administrative summary of a post-Sputnik UFO surge, not a primary sighting report. The Air Force resolved all cases as non-authentic; however these resolutions were preliminary field assessments, not complete formal investigations. OCR quality is good for this section.
