⟳ Deeper read pending. This record is from the FBI 62-HQ-83894 flying-disc file, whose cursive, clippings and faint scans are under-read by automated OCR. It is flagged for a vision-transcription pass and likely undercounts what the source contains — see the documents collection note.
Analysis — our summary

Multiple witnesses at Cordroy, Newfoundland, including storekeeper John P. Legge and William Evans, reported observing a bright red-orange circular object approximately the size of a barrel head at roughly 6,000 feet altitude on the night of July 10-11, 1947. The object was visible for approximately 15 seconds and traveled from northwest to east at very high speed, leaving a yellowish conical afterglow trailing approximately 15 feet. A third witness, Albert Simms, also reported the object. A Newfoundland Constabulary officer at Grand Falls separately reported four round objects in formation flying east on the night of July 9, followed by another large round object with a phosphorus glow moving in a rocking motion. Statements were taken by Intelligence Officer Mercedes Burke at Harmon Field.

As reported — verbatim from the document
"I would say it was traveling at the rate of a shooting star but much closer... The circle was a bright red, nearest I could describe it would be the color of a flame, the after-glow (cone-shaped) was a fainter shade."; "four round shaped figures had passed overhead at a terrific speed and were flying side by side"
Analyst notes — caveats & confidence

Multiple independent witness statements taken by military intelligence officer at Harmon Field, Newfoundland. Witnesses explicitly distinguished the object from shooting stars and aircraft. OCR quality is good for the sworn statements (legible typed carbons); poorer for surrounding material.
