Luminous object over Kodiak Naval Operating Base, Alaska

On April 8, 1949 at approximately 2040 hours, multiple witnesses at the U.S. Naval Operating Base Kodiak, Alaska observed a luminous object crossing the sky from west to east at an estimated altitude of 2,500 feet and speed of 1,500 mph. Witnesses included Deputy Marshal Paul Herring (greenish-blue flaming object, visible ~15 seconds), Lt. Commander D. Shepard (reddish ball of fire, 2 feet diameter, no tail), cab driver Lawrence Shaw (bright blue object, 1.5 ft diameter with 3-foot pinkish streamer), and bus driver Paul Kreager (greenish-blue object, 1.5 ft diameter x 10 ft long, 500 feet altitude at nearest point). All witnesses noted no sound. The object appeared to disintegrate or fade over Chiniak Bay. No aircraft were confirmed in the area at the time.

“He saw a flaming greenish-blue object plunging across the sky at an altitude of 2,500 feet at an estimated speed of 1,500 miles per hour... In the opinion of Mr. Herring, the object was not a meteor as it was too large and there were no sparks which are generally observed associated with such phenomena.”

Four independent witnesses with consistent position, altitude, course, and time. Described differently by each: greenish-blue, reddish ball, bright blue, greenish-blue — variation may reflect viewing angle, duration. Weather: ceiling 3,000 ft scattered, visibility 15 miles, winds NNW at 15 knots, 27 degrees. The report explicitly notes the object's existence was assessed as 'probable' but its nature could not be determined. Possible meteor, but witnesses unanimously excluded meteor based on size and absence of sparks.
